Uganda win U-19 cricket title

Uganda and Sierra Leone have qualified to play in next year`s edition of International Cricket Council`s under-19 World Cup championships to be held in Nairobi after excelling in Lusaka.

Uganda finished at the top of the standings with 12 points after posting six wins and losing once to Namibia in the seven-match qualifier series that ended on Monday.

Otherwise, the qualifiers` surprise package, Sierra Leone secured the world cup berth with exhilarating performance to post five wins, and finish runners up to Uganda by two-point margin.

The West African team lost their first match to Namibia on day four and the other in the final game at the hands of high-flying Ugandans on Monday.

During the final match, Uganda beat Sierra Leone by 48 runs in Duckworth-Lewis method of reduced over computations.

Sierra Leone won the toss and elected to field as Uganda set up a target of 94 runs to perish after 41.3 overs.

Moses Okwera batted 15 in 46 balls as Sierra Leone`s Ibrahim Kabia took three wickets for twenty runs in ten overs of his bowling spell that included two maidens.

Sierra Leone hit back with 35 for eight wickets after 20 overs when it rained heavily. Ibrahim Kamara scored 11runs in 68 balls as Ugandan Geoffrey Nyero hauled six wickets for conceding paltry 7 runs in his eight overs of bowling that was decorated by incredible five maidens. Nyero was named man of the match.

Tanzania finished the qualifiers second from bottom placed Nigeria, managing to post only two wins, one against Namibia and the other versus weak Nigeria to collect four points.

Tanzania lost their final match to hosts Zambia by 63 runs in Duckworth-Lewis method reduced overs computations at Metro Sports Club venue, to mark their poor display in their seven-match appearances.

Zambia won the toss and opted to bat to set up a target of 133 runs (allout) in 44.2 overs with man of the match Sadruddin Bangliwala notching 48 runs in 97 balls he faced.

Tanzanian Riziki Kiseto took three wickets for 28 in 9.2 overs of his bowling spell.Tanzania were 42/7 in 30.4 overs as Ally Kamote registered nine runs in 43 balls.

Zambian Sabir Haveliwala took three wickets for 12 runs in his ten overs of bowling spell that were decorated by four maidens.

Botswana beat Nigeria by six wickets at Lotus Sports Club as the match between Kenya and Namibia was declared no result, following rain interruption to render the Lusaka Sports Club venue unplayable.

Kenya had won the toss and elected to field with Namibia scoring 150/7 in 42 overs.

Raymond Van Schoor who became man of the match registering 48 runs in 74 overs, as Kenyan Karan Kaul took four wickets for 18 runs in his eight overs of bowling that included two maidens.

Kenya innings were interrupted by rain when the score board read 18 runs for no loss in the sixth over.

Uganda and Sierra Leone would join teams from other continents in the global event to be staged in Nairobi, later next year.
